Meditations on "The Price Tag of Being Young"

Parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, mature and wealthy in years; I wish to extend to you my boundless gratitude! Thanks for our inheritance and the legacy you have left our future generations: the destruction of the planet as we know it; the “pale blue dot” that we all call home. Your values, including your mindless materialism, your endless pursuit of property and toys, your gross lust for over-sized gas-guzzling vehicles, your ceaseless hunger for meat with every meal, and your apathy for the suffering of others who happen to have been born less fortunate than you have fashioned an extremely uncomfortable future for millennials and coming generations. To me, despite the loss of wealth, and the pain, suffering, disaster, and destruction that we all have to look forward to; perhaps the most crushing curse of all is the realization that I may never have a child. I may never know the joy that you have experienced by passing on your genes and bringing new life into the un

Flame kept a Bern’in, all night long | The Highlander | UCR

Aaron Lai/Highlander On the top floor of Back to the Grind, where the indignant, electric-voiced Jaykob Mare was setting up his guitar and the sound system, a sign hung next to the giant bookcase encapsulated the spirit that the Bernie Sanders festival and fundraiser, called Bern Fest, built upon: “Back to the Grind is a place for all to come together, leaving all labels outside.” Yet, despite leaving “all labels outside,” many at the April 16 event identified with one label — Bernie supporter — which could be seen everywhere, from the decor to the people. A Post-it board next to the cafe’s counter said “Bernie for…” and had a stack of Post-its next to it. A majority of the board was still blank but some of the few that people had put up said “teachers,” “economy” and “future.” Pins, shirts and other Bernie paraphernalia were worn by many as they mingled around the event, enjoying the bands and guest speakers.
